Reprogramming a garage door keypad can give you a new start if you’re new to the property, you’ve forgotten the current code or you recently upgraded your door. If you need extra guidance on the process, Viking Overhead is here to help! Follow this step-by-step guide.
The first step is to locate your garage door opener. Some openers are mounted against the garage’s wall, while others are mounted to the ceiling. The opener is likely on the ceiling if you have an overhead garage door. If that’s the case, use a safe, steady ladder to get to the opener.
You may want to clear all the existing codes programmed into the keypad for additional security. This step might not be necessary with all types of models, but it can be a good first step before changing your garage door opener’s code.
To clear the keypad, press the “Clear” or “Learn” button on the opener’s control panel.
The “Learn” button is colored and should be labeled once you open the flap covering the control panel. Press and hold the button until the indicator light next to the “Learn” button blinks or turns off. This step will wipe the previous codes from your garage door opener keypad.
Enter a new code on your garage door opener keypad. It might be four or six digits, depending on your opener model. Either way, be sure to choose a code you’ll remember or write it down and keep it somewhere safe.
Once you’ve punched in the new code, press and hold the “Learn” button. When the indicator light illuminates or blinks, you can release it.
Next, you’ll need to activate your garage door opener’s new code on the keypad. You’ll have 30 seconds between pressing the “Learn” button this second time and pressing “Enter” or “Send” on the garage door keypad.
You may need to enter the code on the keypad again and then hit “Send.” The signs of successful activation can vary depending on your garage door opener. It’s likely that the garage door opener light will flash or the door will start to move.
If you missed the 30-second window or forgot the code, you can simply follow steps two to five again.
It’s important to test the new garage door opener code to ensure it will work the next time you use it. Punch in the code and try opening and closing your garage door. The door should operate as usual. Remember to close the garage door opener’s flap once you’re done.
